magink Technology to Be Presented at Microsoft Design Expo 2004
Students from Jerusalem's Bezalel Academy of Art & Design to Present e-Postcard Concept Using magink's Digital Ink Technology
NEW YORK & TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 2004-- magink display technologies, Inc., developers of the world's first full-color digital ink displays, announced today that its proprietary technology will be presented by The Department of Industrial Design of Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Jerusalem, as part of a feature exhibit at the Microsoft Design Challenge 2004.
The Microsoft Design Challenge is an annual expo hosted by Microsoft Research, the company's own computer science research organization founded in 1991. The theme of this year's design challenge, which will be held in Redmond, Seattle on Aug 2nd and 3rd, is"people to people." This year's design challenge will highlight technology that enhances interpersonal communication.
In keeping with that theme, the team from Bezalel, headed by renowned industrial design engineer Ezri Tarazi, developed the shoebox concept: postcard size digital displays placed in a smart shoebox. The postcard displays combine e-mailable technology with personal characteristics of a traditional postcard or letter to create an e-postcard.
The e-postcard utilizes variable resolution, full-color, and high-contrast images produced by magink's technology in a highly efficient and cost-effective manner. magink displays require very little energy to operate and no energy to maintain once the image has been "burned" onto the display. The e-postcard can be removed from the shoebox and read just like a regular handwritten postcard. Use of magink's technology in creating the e-postcard underscores the company's mission: to continuously develop digital display applications that are commercially viable and applicable to an array of industries.
"We are delighted to have our technology showcased in this prestigious and thought-provoking venue and are grateful to Microsoft for providing this arena," said Ran Poliakine, magink CEO. "The incredible work being done by the students of Bezalel under the guidance of Ezri Tarazi, Head of the Industrial Design Department, is paving the way for the technology of the future."
The project, prepared jointly by a team of students from Bezalel's Industrial Design Masters Program and from The Department of Architectural Studies, will be considered by an international team of judges alongside other projects from four schools in The United States, Brazil, and India.
