(AP) - NASA on Sunday delayed the launch of space shuttle Atlantis until January after a gauge in the fuel tank failed for the second time in four days. With only a few days remaining in the launch window for the shuttle's mission to the international space station, senior managers decided to stand down until next month in hopes of better understanding the perplexing and persistent fuel gauge problem.

History Of Microprocessor April 29, 2005 (AXcess News) Washington - NASA will reportedly delay the launch of the first space shuttle flight since the 2003 Columbia disaster from May until mid-July, amid ongoing concerns over fuel tank debris.Officials say the postponement of the shuttle Discovery mission, the second such delay this month, will be formally announced by the U.S. space agency later, Friday.

Ecs Motherboard An investigation into the 2003 Columbia disaster found that a piece of insulating foam broke off the external fuel tank during launch and hit the shuttle's left wing, leaving a hole. Hot gases entered the wing during re-entry, causing the shuttle to break apart.Earlier this month, during a test on the launch pad, ice buildup was found on the shuttle Discovery's fuel tank when it was filled with super-chilled liquid oxygen and hydrogen propellants. Shuttle engineers, concerned the ice formation could shake loose during liftoff, are said to be trying to install a small heater at the top of the tank.

Brackets have shed debris in launches since Columbia, but it wasn't until Endeavour's flight that such debris caused noticeable damage again. NASA is considering possible modifications to the brackets and will decide what, if anything, should be done before the next shuttle launch, targeted for late October.
